Tips To Prep for Your Photo Shoot!

Updated: Jul 19, 2023

As someone who partakes in photo shoots both professionally and just for fun I’ve had my fair share of learning moments, from posing fails, nerves, low confidence and whatever else might ruin a perfectly set up photo opportunity.

Learn from my mistakes and make your experience one to remember!

I’ve underprepared and over prepared more times than I can count, and both are equally as stressful. So, to help you have less stress and improve the outcome and experience, I’ve compiled a list of best practices you may use to prepare before your shoot!

I decided to write about the do's and don'ts when it comes to scheduling and showing up to a professional photo shoot. These tips are for anyone wanting to partake in a family, professional or creative photo shoot.

  • Book your shoot with a trusted photographer.

Look for someone who has many positive reviews or have a friend refer you. I like researching my photographers by searching them on Facebook, Instagram and doing a simple google search, remember you'll get what you pay for in most instances, if you're looking for a deal be ready to deal with any and all consequences!

  • Research poses and PRACTICE in front of a mirror!

It may feel silly, but this is the best way for you to find the best angles and fix any awkward positions that will most definitely occur.

  • Pick and layout 2-5 outfits a few days before.

try on outfits day before your photo shoot. I really like help when deciding what to wear so I model my outfits for family and/or friends to get input of what looks good. At the end of the day, it's your choice, just make sure you can pose in your outfits and feel confident wearing whatever you choose.

  • Find Inspiration Pictures!

If you’re having hair and makeup done by us or another artist, make sure you find a few inspiration pictures of other people or yourself with makeup/hair styles that you like. Make sure that if you are sending pictures of other people that they have the same complexion and close to your hairstyle/ type as possible.

  • Wash and deep condition hair the day before.

Air dry or blow dry DO NOT add any additional products other than leave in conditioner. The artist will want as clean of a slate as possible to build your hair style with their favorite working products.

  • Come to the shoot with a clean, lightly moisturized face.

Your makeup artist will thank you. Some products like some SPF, coconut oil and other skin care products can make it hard for the makeup to last and also difficult to blend properly. So, save your skincare routine for after you've removed your makeup.

  • Stretch the morning before because posing is a workout!

I recommend a gentle yoga practice to get things moving and wake up tired or sore joints. You can find SO many beginner yoga videos by searching on google or directly on YouTube. my personal favorites are Boho Beautiful or Yoga with Adrienne.

  • Do some breathing exercises to relax.

Download our free meditation we created for you! Find a comfortable, distraction free space to calm your body, mind and find your authentic spiritual self.

Don't forget to like, share and subscribe to our YouTube channel.

  • Show up with an open mind and a positive attitude!

Leave your worries at the door and step into the present moment, this will help you look your best while your pictures are being taken.

I hope you found this list helpful! If you have any other tips or tricks, feel free to comment and help others make the most out of their photo shoots!
